The Border Guard (BG) has been involved in cooperation at EU external borders with the European agency FRONTEX since 2011. These activities are part of Switzerland's border management strategy. Aside from participating in training programmes and working groups as well as contributing to the creation of risk analyses, this includes in particular participating in operations at the external borders of Schengen member states.
Every year, the BG deploys around 40 employees at the external borders of Europe that are the worst affected by migratory pressure. Consequently, the BG works around 1,200 deployment days per year combating illegal migration and cross-border crime.
The border guards deployed include document advisors, vehicle specialists, service dog handlers, border surveillance specialists and debriefers. Debriefers conduct voluntary interviews with migrants in refugee reception centres in order to obtain information on states of origin, itineraries, gangs of traffickers, etc.
